The Brooks Fund History Project Handover and Panel Discussion

Wednesday, January 21, 2015
Nashville

615 Church Street

You’re invited to join The Brooks Fund in the presentation and official archiving of The Brooks Fund History Project to the Nashville Public Library.

The Brooks Fund History Project is a diverse multimedia record of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) life in Middle Tennessee, which will be archived in NPL’s Special Collections Division: Oral History Collections. This collection will be accessible to the public and provides a record of an earlier generation that struggled for acceptance with themselves, their family and community.

Since spring 2009, multiple interviews have been conducted chronicling the lives of gay, transgender and bisexual residents, reflecting on life in Middle Tennessee before 1970, and how homosexuality was viewed in the larger community.

"Gay and lesbian citizens of Middle Tennessee have a lot to tell us about what life was like for them fifty or sixty years ago,” said Iris Buhl, volunteer chair of The History Project. “They were – and are – an integral part of the fabric of this community. Our knowledge of the history of Middle Tennessee is incomplete without their stories.

A documentary film including these oral histories has been produced and will be unveiled later this year.
